When you make the decision to relocate, especially if you are relocating a family, the logistical challenges can consume every ounce of the move. I realized that it’s important to think through the major items that need to be moved and how it’s going to get from Point A to Point B.
I found that it takes approximately two weeks for “stuff” to be transported cross-country. This means that you and your family will arrive at your new destination WAY before your “stuff” does. This takes some planning in order to be sure you can get around and take care of your basic needs.
Here are a few of my basic tips to get you through…
5. If you do plan on shipping your car, an open-carrier is the most cost-effective. I have typically used a vehicle transport broker, which has allowed me to find the cheapest rate. Call at least 2-3 brokers, as I found the cost difference can be in the thousands. Now, when you get to your destination, you will most likely need to rent a car. Always give yourself a few days grace period from the time you are told that your vehicle will arrive. You can always return your rental car early.
4. Transporting pets takes some time to know how you are going to get them to your new destination. In order for your pet to transport on a plane, the pet needs to have an updated medical form from a Vet and be up to date on shots. Be sure to check with the airlines ahead of time as to the requirements. I have also found that there are only so many “pet reservations” per aircraft. Be sure to book your pet on the same plane as you are!
3. Valuables and important papers, such as passports, legal documents, birth certificates, etc, should be carried by you at all times. Don’t put these important documents in a box, packed away on a moving truck. Get yourself a secure backpack and keep these items protected!
2. If you are moving a long distance, you will not have all your “stuff” immediately and plan on staying in a hotel. During my second cross-country move, we wound up staying in a hotel for two weeks. Although, we had already closed on our new home, we did not have a mattress to even place on the floor. Figure temporary housing/hotel room into your budget is critical.
1. As best as you can, watch the weather report! The last thing you want is to unload a moving truck in the pouring rain.
