No matter how much you think you are prepared, moving is overwhelming and daunting! Whether you have the most supportive partner or moving on your own, moving can put every relationship to the test, including your relationship with yourself! After experiencing two cross-country moves, with kids, homes, pets, and much more, this blog is to provide practical advice on what it really takes to stay focused on your move. Here are the tips of those things that slip between the cracks:
Top 5 Moving Tips:
5. Keep tabs on your important documents and valuables, such as jewelry. If you are moving out of your local area, don’t forget to clean out a safe deposit box, if you have one. You also may need to get a temporary safe deposit box if you want to secure items throughout your move. You will have many movers and people in your home (especially if you are having realtor showings), and it’s important to safeguard important and valuable stuff! Just don’t forget to take the items out if you need them!
4. Everyone has more food in their pantry and fridge than you can possibly use up before you move. The half of jar of mayonnaise and ketchup will need to be thrown away, unless you can give them to friends/family. Start to eat up your pantry items and fridge items a few months beforehand, even if you don’t know your definite move date. Also, start to donate items to a food bank and check expiration dates and throw away any expired food (within reason). Cleaning out the fridge and pantry is always a last minute task, so try to make it as less stressful as possible.
3. As with your fridge, guaranteed there are old hygiene items and makeup that needs to be discarded. Only move items that are worth moving and you are going to use. Cleaning out vanity drawers, makeup bags, and old medicine drawers takes time. For old medicines, be sure to drop off at an approved medicine drop-off at a drug store to avoid any danger of medicines in the water supply.
2. Manage your trash! Know when your trash pickups are and how large your bins are. On top of your normal trash, trash definitely piles up as you are moving. Whether it’s expired food or your kids school papers from years ago, the trash will exceed your expectations.
1. Be practical on what you are moving! Emotional attachment to “stuff” happens, but if you don’t use it, it has no sentimental value, and it’s not something that you typically care about, it’s most likely going to be in a corner of your new place or stay in the moving box.
Good Luck on your move and Plug Through!
